China produces 62 million pieces of leather garments yearly China (June 02, 2002) - The China's leather industry has been on the track of fast development for more than 10 years. Making full use the advantageous opportunity of the world leather industry shifting to Asia, China has became one of major leather producing countries in a period of some 10 years. According to the statistics, China produces some 130 million pieces of hides (converted into cow hide), some 2.2 billion pairs of leather shoes as well as 62 million pieces of leather garments every year, duplicating the output than that of ten years ago. In recent years, the development of the China's leather industry is not limited to just satisfying the need of domestic market and is stepping into the world market in big paces. In the year 2000, the export value of the main commodities of China's Leather Industry reached 11.77 billion US dollars, up 20% over the same period of the previous year, among which 4.37 billion US dollars came from the export of leather shoes, up 10% over the same period of the previous year, 2.85 billion US dollars were from travelling goods and suitcases, up 14%, 1.85 billion US dollars from leather garments, up 53%, and 0.59 billion US dollars from leather gloves, up 38%. The huge Chinese market also attracted a large amount of leather products from different countries in the world. According to the statistics, the import volume reached 2.8 billion US dollars in 2000, up 26% over the same period of last year, in which 290 million US dollars came from footwear components, up 1%, over 85 million dollars occurred with leather producing machinery, up 19%. In the countries and regions that have the most frequent leather trade with China, such as Republic of Korea, Thailand, Italy and Australia, the import volume of the China's leather products increased by 10 - 30% over the previous year. Including the United States, the five countries and regions have become the five top overseas trade partners of the leather industry in mainland China.
